History

With over 230 years of tradition behind us, A W Hainsworth and Sons Ltd is still a family owned and managed business today. The family traces its roots in textiles back seven generations to the end of the 18th century when “Old Bim” started manufacturing woollen cloth in Farsely on the outskirts of Leeds, West Yorkshire.

In 1882 production was moved a mile up the valley to Stanningley by Old Bims’ grandsons, and the mill is still situated there today.

Originally Hainsworth concentrated on traditional production of the manufacture of uniform cloths for Government contracts both at home and overseas. In the late 1950s the company started diversifying into other areas.

Over the following decades a series of high quality acquisitions were made which not only brought new products and vitality to the mill but also people with valuable knowledge, skills and experience in woollen based weaving.

In 1968 the company entered the cue sport arena with the purchase of Hallidays and have been the innovators of snooker cloth ever since.
